Anyone who's learned a foreign language knows that one of the challenges on the road to becoming fluent is figuring out idiomatic expressions, or idioms - groups of words with a literal meaning that's different than the intended meaning, like "That Schnapps knocked my socks off!" - it didn't really knock your socks off - well, we hope not - it was just a really strong drink. When you learn a language by absorption and immersion as a native, idioms are mostly just second nature, but learning how to understand and use them properly in a foreign language takes more work, because the first thing you hear in your head is the literal translation in your own language...which we can actually have a bit of fun with, especially with German idioms.
